5 August 2010 Make a platter

This term the girls are working on the Creative Cookery Interest Certificate. This week the girls were making a platter. They had chosen Sorbet, Lolly Cake and Fairy cakes to go on the platter.
Lolly Cake - This was delicious - there were some very big chunks of eskimoes in the cake. It was a double batch and almost didn't fit into the freezer.
Fairy Cakes - in different sizes. The girls iced  them and tried to eat the leftover edible glitter - apparently it doesn't taste very nice on its own.
Sorbet - this takes a lot longer to set than expected! It is still  in the freezer - I am wondering if I can let it soften a little and give it another beating and set it again for next week. The girls had sorbet shots so they could at least try the sorbet ...it went down well so must have tasted alright!

Camp

We went on an Indoor Camp at Raincliff Scout Camp with the local Guide unit. Our theme was "Whole in One camp". It's amazing how many activities link to the theme ...
Croquet
Making doughnuts - We forgot one crucial ingredient - the recipe!!So the girls made pikelets with holes instead, outside on the hotplate.
Photoframes
Scavenger hunt - looking for film containers that had parts of the Guides own inside.
Stitch a hole and sew a hole. The girls made their own blanket patches and sewed a button on their patches.

The Rangers were meant to do the Games Interest Certificate that weekend. So they had knuckle bones and cards out there. Monopoly Deal proved to be a big hit with leaders, guides and rangers.
Certain Rangers foretold girls futures using a deck of cards. (Hope mine doesn't come true!!)
The Rangers told me they wanted to go for a walk ...and lo and behold found cellphone coverage!!

As always, the flying fox was very popular!

Queen's Garden Party 29 July 2010

One of the assessments I had to do from my last training was to organise and run a 'mystery night' for my unit. A while ago I had made up a wide game based on going to a Tea party with the Queen. I adapted this for the girls in my unit.
Activities included:
use morse code with jelly-beans and pebbles (no cellphoen reciption at Buckingham Palace :)
practise curtsies, posture and table manners
make the palace out of straws
create hats for the tea party
make up a skit to perform to the Queen
tear the South Island out of newspaper and show where Timaru is
tell the Queen how the Guiding Laws are similar to some of the laws in New Zealand.

There were a lot of laughs that night and I was impressed with how the compared Guiding laws to NZ laws!

Will post a photo or two shortly
